Navaratri day 8: Devi Mahagauri Avatar

       


 

        Today marks the 8th day of Navratri 2020 and Mahagauri is worshipped on this auspicious day of Navratri. Mahagauri is the eight avatar of Navdurga. Goddess Mahagauri is compared to the conch, moon and white flower of Kundadue to her fair complexion. She is also called Swethambardhara as she is always clad in white clothes.

        She holds a trident and damru in the upper right and left hands, respectively. And she holds the Abhaya and Vara Mudra in the lower hands.This form of the Mother Goddess is mounted on a bull.




        Goddess Mahagauri blesses her devotees with the qualities of peace and enduranceKanya Pooja is performed on this day with great reverence, as 9 young girls are invited home for they are considered as 9 formsof Goddess Durga. Their feet are washed and adorned with a tilak on their foreheads. They are served puri, halwa, black chana, etc and are gifted benevolently.


Colour of the Day:

The pink color is significant to this day as it symbolizes hope, 
confidence, and a fresh start.


Legend:





       Goddess Parvati in order to beget Lord Shiva as her husband
 underwent 
severe penance in the forest braving storms, drought, severe heat and cold.

The ravages of nature made her complexion dark with time.  Lord Shiva pleased 

with her austerity agreed to marry her. Heunleashed the holy Ganges from his

 matted hair to wash all the accumulated dirt on her body. This causedher to become

 white-complexioned and luminous. Thus she came to be called Mahagauri (extremely fair).

"Poornandu nibhaan gauree somachakrasthitaan

         ashtaman mahaagauree trinetraam /

 varaabheetikaraan trishool damaroodharaan

         mahaagauree bhajem //"


Bhog to Mahagauri:

 

  • Coconut is offered with love to Mahagauri on Ashtami. 
  • It is believed donating coconuts to Brahmins on this day,
  •  can fulfill the desire of a childless couple with a child. 

  • Fresh unboiled milk,sweets made from mawa, black chana, and
  •  fresh jasmine flowers are offered with a pious heart.
  • Sing an Aarti to conclude the pooja and 
  • offer your salutations by lighting a camphor.
  • Distribute the prasad (bhog) after the puja.
